Cooking and burning

Understand the base cooking timer and how food progresses from raw to cooked and burnt.

Base cooking behavior

The recovered FoodCooking class advances its cooking timer using the game simulation speed. Its default cooking threshold is 30 and its maximum timer is 90.

After the cooking threshold, food changes to its cooked inventory type. The burnt label appears when the burn-progress fraction exceeds 0.85, which is beyond 81 on the default timer.

These are base class values, not a promise of real-world seconds. Food-specific overrides and simulation speed can affect the experience.

Prepare your pot

The in-game guide says to set the pot on coals with no water in it, then add raw fish or meat. For melting snow, collect snow with the steel pot and set it near the fire on coals.
